The Girls on the Beach Film Review
The Girls on the Beach
Director: William Witney
Year: 1965
Rating: 4.5
. . . are all
within reach. A beach movie that isn't produced by AIP meaning there is no
Annette and Frankie but there are still plenty of women in bikinis and cleavage
that you would have to measure by the yard. The camera does its best to emphasize
that aspect of the film. This is a pretty feeble effort with a cast of unknowns
who stayed that way. With two big exceptions and are the only reason to watch
this. That and the before mentioned cleavage. The Alpha Beta sorority has
a shortfall of $10,000 that their den mother has given their reserve fund
to charities. These are resourceful girls though and immediately
think of ways to raise money from baking a prize-winning cake, seducing a
brainiac to win a puzzle and swishing hips to win a beauty contest. And giving
a concert with the Beatles. No, the Beatles are not in this film.
But three toxic males who want to get into
their tiny bikinis pretend to know Ringo and tell them that Ringo has agreed
to come to America to be in their show. And they believe it. Sorority girls.
Now strangely enough playing at the small beach club are a few acts. You
may have heard of them. The Beach Boys. Ys, those Beach Boys. They perform
three songs. And in their sorority is a girl who likes to sing - looks familiar
- oh - Leslie Gore. Sadly, she doesn't sing It's My Party, but she sings
three other songs. The post-Buddy-Holly Crickets are also playing in the
club. You might think that putting the Beach Boys and Leslie Gore in a show
would sell tickets but one of the male toxic characters says after hearing
the Beach Boys, "They are ok". Brian Wilson must have been pissed and maybe
decided to make Pet Sounds at that moment. No Beatles, but the girls do dress
up as the Beatles and put on a show. People really paid money to see
these films once upon a time in more innocent days.
