Fighting Fist

Director:  Sonny Chiba
Year: 1992
Rating: 5.5

This is a Hong Kong-Japan co-production that was at least partly directed by Sonny China. I say partly because I am not entirely sure. IMDB has someone named Casey Chan as the director while the HKMDB has them both. Chiba is also at the top of the cast credits but don't get excited that there is this obscure Chiba film out there. He appears three times, each for about a minute and only talks. This certainly has the feel of a Hong Kong low budget action film from that period with most of the fights taking place in deserted warehouses or on boats and the spaces between the fights are poorly paced and rather idiotic at times. On the Hong Kong side we get Sibelle Hu, Chin Kar-lok and Ken Lo, which is a pretty great action threesome. For Japan there is mainly Shiotani Shogo. He is terrific and had been part of Chiba's Japan Action Club. He is the star of the film and his moves and prowess are the highlight with two fights against Ken Lo and a few other fights. He went on after this to play Ultraman but sadly killed himself in 1992.

It starts off in Hong Kong - Aberdeen to be specific  - where Sibelle and Chin Kar-lok are following a man in white among all the small boats tied up at the docks. They suspect he is a dealer of drugs. He goes into a warehouse and when he leaves a bit later everyone inside is dead. Chin gets a look at him and realizes he is a Japanese friend that he used to know from martial arts school. It is Sato (Shogo) but he can't believe he is a killer now. He is in fact but doing it for a Death Squad in the Japanese police headed by Chiba.  They are after Lee and Sato just killed all three of his sons. Lee blames Chin for not stopping it and and goes after his family and him.

His sister escapes and goes looking for Sato in Japan. She is played by Song Lei, whom some may remember as the opium addicted narrator of The Blade. Sibelle goes to Japan as well. They all come together in a number of solid action scenes. Ken Lo plays a real swine - hitman for Lee with blades that pop out of his shoes. And he wields a nasty sword as well. Chiba much to my surprise only directed a few films and if he really directed this one it is no wonder. Good action but not much else going for it. This was apparently a Japanese straight to video film and there is a Japanese language version and a Cantonese one. I wonder if they are different otherwise? I came across one summary of the film and it is nothing like  this film.
