Outlaw Brothers

Director: Frankie Chan
Year: 1990
Rating: 7.5

Policeman to his superior officer, "Madam take my gun with you". "I won't be needing one". And Madam walks into the gang's lair and beats the crap out of all of them with a blitzkreig of roundhouse kicks, punches, flips, somersaults and her trademark kick behind her head. It is Yukari Oshima just doing her thing. She was at the top of her game in 1990 as was the female action genre. She had transitioned from being the evil Japanese villainess in Angel to often being a cop or hero. It suited her crooked toothed-smile and flashing black eyes. Her fans loved her as a sadistic villain, but even more so when she shows her comical side. For pure goofiness, check her out in The Big Deal with Moon Lee. Now the Japanese villain roles are taken over by Michiko Nishiwaki, who doesn't show up till the 45-minute mark snorting cocaine. A baddie for sure.

This isn't strictly a Girls with Gun's film though as the main star and director is the multi-talented Frankie Chan. Perhaps one of the most under-appreciated figures in the Hong Kong film industry in the 1970s through the 90's as an actor, martial artist, director, choreographer, writer, producer and perhaps most impressive as the composer of over 300 film scores. And we are not talking about the music for cheap B films. During the 1970s, he scored over a hundred films for Shaw and then began branching out with Sammo, Tsui Hark and Wong Kar-wai. The films that he directed such as this one are good fun; some wackiness, a little romance and a tsunami of action and stunts. He had directed Yukari previously in one of her best, Burning Ambition, and gives her the spotlight here - not only in action but some cute light moments as well.

Frankie Chan and Max Mok are car thieves who specialize in Porsches and Ferraris. They are very good. Yukari is after them, but develops a soft spot for Frankie - much to the frustration of her second in command (Michael Mui) who loves her like a puppy. The two car thieves first get on the bad side of another gang of car thiefs leading to a big fracas with more nasty falls than I could count. Yukari joins in. Then they really get on the bad side of a drug smuggling gang led by Michiko and her Gwielo boys - Mark Houghton, Vincent Lyn, Dan Mintz, Jeff Falcon, Steve Tartalia, Bruce Fontaine and Ken Goodman; all HK regulars when they needed a Gweilo. Two other favorites are Sheila Chan and Sharon Kwok as the club girl with a good kick. The very attractive Kwok was never on the level with the top female action stars but she was in a couple decent ones - Red Fists, Dead Target and Lethal Panther 2 (with Yukari). This is oodles of fun if brainless action and stunts are your thing. They are mine when these are the performers.
