HK Cinema - 1982

After completing The Butterfly Murders, Tsui Hark made two very strange and unpopular films – Don’t Play with Fire and We are Going to Eat You and then a comedy for Cinema City – All the Wrong Clues – before having his next big breakthrough film. This was Zu: Warriors of the Magic Mountain.
Utilizing terrific special effects (for its time) and an incredible imagination, Hark creates an exciting adventure story with mind boggling visuals. This apocalyptic tale of good versus evil stars Yuen Biao, Sammo, Moon Lee, Brigitte Lin, Adam Cheng and Damian Lau. This was the first great fantasy film of the 1980’s and it set the trend for many more to come. Along with Duel to the Death made also in 1982, it created the genre of the flying kung-fu fantasy film. From this point on – anything that someone could imagine could be put on film. Duel to the Death has some amazing scenes and was directed by Ching Siu-Tung who later directed Chinese Ghost Story, The East is Red and produced Heroic Trio.
